The Mexico permanent resident visa is suited for foreigners who intend to stay in Mexico indefinitely. In most cases, the procedure has to be started at your country’s Mexican consulate and finalized in Mexico by doing something called CANJE (an exchange) at the INM. We can help by arranging an appointment and assist throughout the Mexican residency visa process. The CURP number is included in the quote.

“Definitively moving to another country is a great adventure that requires a guide. ”.
Costs at the Mexican Consulate
• Consular fees are updated every month
• The visa fee, regardless of whether the visa is issued or denied, must be paid on the
day of the appointment.
Validity
• Permanent, Temporary &Temporary Resident Visas with work permit have a validity
of six months from the day they are issued.
• Upon arrival in Mexico, must be exchanged within the first 30 days at the National
Migration Institute (INM) for a Card.
The LFD contemplates the payment of migratory rights for the different and specific migratory procedures for foreigners and expatriates with temporary or permanent residences in Mexico requested by the INM. Due to the above, the rights payment rates increase every year.
Benefits of Both Temporary and Permanent Residency in Mexico
Firstly, with both temporary and permanent residency, you can get a Mexican registration number called a CURP (Clave Unica de Registro de Población – Unique Population Registry Number).
Similar to the US social security number, the CURP allows you to:
• Open accounts at any bank.
• Buy and register a car.
• Get a Mexican driver’s license (without giving up your foreign one).
•Join the national healthcare program with IMSS (Mexican Institute for Social
Security).
Alternatively, you may apply for private health insurance.
• Get a homeowner’s exemption from paying capital gains tax on a future sale of a
Mexican property.
• Enjoy special rates and discounts, such as transport and entry to sites and events.
Permanent Residency - Pros
• One-time application
• One immigration fee payment
• Obtain a credit card
• Permission to work
• All the benefits/rights available to Mexican citizens, except for the right to vote, or
buy land or properties in restricted areas
Permanent Residency - Cons
• Application for permanent residency is restricted to certain cases. For example,
spouses of Mexican nationals must get temporary residency first.
• Permanent residency holders must import foreign-plated cars. You can sell your car
after crossing the border from the USA or Canada or import it into Mexico. However,
not all cars can be imported, so check the rules according to your situation.
How to Get Permanent Residency in Mexico
Permanent residency allows you to live indefinitely in Mexico, and it has many benefits.
There are various ways to get permanent residency in Mexico; let’s review them.
Take the direct route to permanent residency. For some applicants, it is possible to get permanent residency from a Mexican consulate without having temporary residency first. This applies mainly to consulates in the USA and Canada, and the decision depends on the one you choose. In most cases, you need to be retired and, of course, fulfill the financial requirements.
You’ve done four years of temporary residency
More commonly, you can get permanent residency after four years of continuous temporary residency. This change of condition is not automatic. Therefore, you must apply via the change of condition procedure.
In general, there is no need to show bank data at the INM (Immigration Office). You will have already done so at a Mexican consulate when getting your temporary residency. So, this entire procedure can be done in Mexico, at an INM office.
You have a child born in Mexico
You can also gain permanent resident status if you have a child born in Mexico. In this case, you get your permanent residency at an INM office in Mexico. Furthermore, you can even apply with a tourist visa or at any stage of your temporary residency.
Your partner is Mexican or already has permanent status
If you are married, or are a long-term partner to a Mexican national or a permanent resident, you apply for temporary residency first for two years. After that, you will be able to apply for your permanent residency under the procedures in 2 (above).
Your parent or child is already a permanent resident
If you are under 18 and your parent is already a permanent resident, you can get permanent status through them at the INM. If you have a child who is a permanent resident, you can obtain it too (parents of any age)
